Read on to hear about how The Family Farm got started here in Holly Springs.
In 1990 North Carolina native Tim Congleton married Faye Holland and settled in with his bride on a beef cattle farm in Holly Springs that had been in her family for five generations. Tim, who is also a financial advisor and partner at White Oak Wealth Partners, would spend 25 years alongside his wife assisting in the day-to-day maintenance of the farm and eventually running the entire operation. Faye passed away in 2014 and Tim was faced with a predicament. With the modernization and growth of the region and the old way of life slipping away, Tim wanted to ensure that the farm could stay a farm and preserve its generational stories. So he collaborated with Faye’s niece June Propes (who was born and raised on the farm) and her husband Keith (who is also Tim’s business partner) and opened the working family farm to the public. They named it The Family Farm on Avent Ferry to reflect not only its multigenerational ownership but also its focus on family-oriented activities.
Perhaps one of the most idyllic places in Wake County, The Family Farm on Avent Ferry is a year-round delight for the whole family. During the spring months you can procure fresh seasonal produce from the popular McLean Farms Strawberry Trailer, take pictures on the farm’s vintage John Deere Tractor, visit the nursery, and catch sight of the farm’s resident animals that include donkeys, cows, chickens, and horses. The Family Farm on Avent Ferry recently formed a partnership with Garden Supply Company to provide visitors annuals, perennials, tropicals, herbs, and fresh flowers. During the fall season a variety of locally sourced specialty pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks, hay bales, and fresh mums are available for purchase. At Christmastime The Family Farm on Avent Ferry transforms into a winter wonderland where you can create family memories: pick out a North Carolina Fraser Fir, grab a fresh garland or wreath, sit by the bonfire, meet Santa, and take your holiday pictures on his sleigh.
With its 85-year-old cow barn, century-old tobacco barns, and rich history, the farm is a tribute to Holly Springs’ past. Tim Congleton’s dream, the work of June and Keith Propes, and the community’s support ensures that their families and yours can enjoy the farm for generations to come.
