Britney's Book Blog: Rich Dad Poor Dad

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki

In a lot of the podcasts that I listen to, the host will ask the interviewee what their favorite book is, and more often than not, they name Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki. So.. I thought I would give it a whirl.  Let’s talk about money—something we all deal with, yet rarely get taught how to manage. Rich Dad Poor Dad breaks down the money myths most of us grew up believing and replaces them with powerful lessons that can reshape your financial future. Honestly, I was hesitant to read it, because money is a tough conversation for me. I wrangle with it like you do a toddler getting out of the tub. Money has both pros and cons.. so let’s dive into the key takeaways from this "must-read" book. 🌟

Mindset Matters

The way you think about money shapes everything. Kiyosaki emphasizes the difference between saying, “I can’t afford it” versus “How can I afford it?” The first shuts down possibilities, while the second opens your mind to solutions. It’s not just about what you have but how you think. 💭💡 You know I am all about mindset - so this resonated with me!!

Financial Education Is Key

Most of us learn about money from our parents, for better or worse. Kiyosaki stresses the importance of understanding how money works. This includes learning about assets, liabilities, and the basics of accounting. Because as he puts it.. money without financial intelligence? Gone in a flash. 📚💰

Assets vs. Liabilities

One of the book’s most powerful lessons is understanding the difference between assets and liabilities. Simply put: An asset puts money in your pocket. A liability takes money out. The rich focus on acquiring income-generating assets like real estate, stocks, and businesses, while everyone else often mistakes liabilities (like cars and fancy gadgets) for assets. 🏠📈 They might bring us joy (hello Louis bags!), but don't make us money. See my struggle here?!?

Make Money Work for You

Instead of working hard for money, learn to have money work for you. This means creating passive income streams through investments and businesses. (I can help you with that ;). Think of it like planting a tree: you nurture it for years, and eventually, it provides shade (or income) with minimal effort. 🌳💵

Don’t Fear Risk—Learn to Manage It

Fear often holds people back from taking financial risks, but Kiyosaki teaches us that risk is part of the journey. The key is learning how to manage it. Whether it’s real estate, stocks, or starting a business, preparation and education can turn risks into opportunities. 🚀 Thankfully, I married someone who has a high tolerance for risk! :)

Start Small and Grow

Building wealth doesn’t happen overnight. Start with what you have and keep reinvesting. For example, in real estate, begin with a smaller property and trade up for larger ones over time. The goal? Keep expenses low, reduce liabilities, and focus on growing your asset column. 🏘️🌟 (again- we can help you out here! :) )

Favorite Quote

"Broke is temporary. Poor is eternal." This quote is a reminder that poverty is as much about mindset as it is about money. With the right attitude and financial knowledge, anyone can change their financial situation. 💡💖

Biggest Takeaway

Wealth isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about how much you keep. By focusing on financial education, acquiring assets, and managing risks, you can achieve financial freedom—no matter where you’re starting from. 💵🌟
